When you are first learning how to play poker, it seems an impossible task to get all the values of the cards memorized, which combination of cards is better than another, and how to actually bet your hand once the game has begun. But, not to worry; there are so many folks out there that eat and sleep poker, that help is everywhere; so learning can be a lot of fun and downright exciting once you get started.

Strategy is serious business when playing poker and to be assured of a positive outcome for your hands played, you should establish the different possibilities for each move and determine the one with the best return and go with it. The playing options you will learn as you find out the means of how to win at poker, are whether to bet or call, raise, or check, or if all options are exhausted—-fold. Making wise betting decisions is critical.

The odds against you during the play of each hand need to be calculated so you can determine how to bet; and to accomplish this, you need to have a solid plan in your mind before starting play. A good plan will give you the road map on how to win at poker, and when you figure out the odds—if the return on the play is greater than the odds—-then go ahead and bet. But if the odds are in your favor, then the sky is the limit—-bet as heavily as you possibly can afford.

Tactics and whether or not you have them and how you use them, play a big part when you are learning how to win at poker; because there is a lot of psychology in the game. The betting has more to do with psyching out your opponents and figuring out what their posturing or lack of it means, and how to bet your hand accordingly than it does with what actual cards you hold.

Being a predictable player can be your downfall at the poker table because the opposition can read from your actions what you are holding in your hand and they will bet accordingly. One of the best things you can learn when you are getting your feet wet on how to win at poker, is how to bluff. Bluffing can take a while to master, but once you get it down pat, it can be a formidable weapon at the poker table if you use it correctly, and your opponents won’t be able to tell exactly what it is you have in your hand.

Have a system when you play so that your betting is not predictable and you have a strategy in mind as soon as you start to play your hand. And don’t form a pattern of play—-over a period of time your body language and your talk can reveal your holdings to the other players, and the jig is up then. If you want to know how to win at poker, learn how to disguise your hand, memorize what cards have been played in the hand, and know what cards are still “live”. That way, with good strategy, controlled body language, and varied play; you will be top dog in no time.

Poker has the most avid followers of any card game in the world and for very good reason. It is fun, a psychological mind game, full of strategic maneuvers, and very exciting when the pot really starts to add up. Learning how to win at poker can be one of the best ways to insert some variety and exciting competition into your life and possibly make some money to boot.
